Amidst a backdrop of swirling controversy and social media uproar, mostly under the hashtag #UgandaParliamentExhibition, the Rt. Hon Speaker Annet Anitah Among of Bukedea has staunchly affirmed her position, declaring she will not resign from her role as Speaker of Parliament.
Addressing a public rally at Apopong Village in Bukedea, Speaker Among fervently dismissed claims circulating on social media platforms, attributing them to individuals whom she referred to as "homosexual propagators."
Greeted by thousands of fervent supporters during the ongoing update and display of NRM members' register, Speaker Among was hailed with a heroic welcome, signaling unwavering local support despite the online storm surrounding her tenure.
In her impassioned speech, Anita Among urged her constituents to disregard the scandalous allegations proliferated by social media, emphasizing that such efforts were driven by opponents of her stance on key legislative matters, particularly regarding laws concerning homosexuality.
"They are saying they want to reclaim their seat as Speaker, reclaiming a seat of a speaker, what did they leave there? What have I not done? You mean people of Teso and Bukedea don't want this seat?" remarked Among, amidst laughter from the crowd.
With unwavering confidence, the Speaker rebuffed calls for her resignation, dismissing them as futile and emphasizing her enduring support among fellow legislators and constituents alike.
"They are saying I resign, I resign and go where? These people saying I resign, did they put me there?" Among questioned, asserting her firm alliance with President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni and her track record of accomplishments as a woman Member of Parliament.
The outburst from Speaker Anita Among came in response to concerns voiced by Bukedea District Chairperson Rosemary Akol and other local leaders, who expressed shock at the intensity of social media attacks leveled against the Speaker.
Flanked by a cadre of supportive MPs, Among's critics were met with stern resistance as her allies vowed to defend her name against mudslinging tactics. Echoing her sentiments, they called upon the people of Bukedea to rally behind Among's bid for a third term, pledging unwavering support both within the constituency and within the hallowed halls of Parliament.
Amidst the fervor, Speaker Among registered her name in the NRM register for the first time, symbolizing her continued allegiance to the party. Accompanied by a jubilant procession of supporters, Among's journey home was punctuated by resounding cheers, a testament to the enduring support she commands back home in Bukedea.
