Businessman Claims Ownership of Funds Allegedly Stolen from Residence of NRM Treasurer
    • February 12, 2024 • 11 months ago

Hajji Sulaiman Mafabi Lumolo, a prominent businessman based in Kampala, has come forward asserting that the funds reportedly stolen from the residence he shares with National Resistance Movement (NRM) party national treasurer, Amb Barbara Nekesa, actually belonged to him. The reported robbery took place in Kyeitabya zone, Bukasa parish, Makindye division, Kampala City on December 15, 2023.

The robbery occurred at 4 am and led to the arrest of Ivan Lukungu, a 26-year-old boda boda rider. Lukungu, as per police reports, utilized a portion of the stolen funds to purchase a new Toyota Harrier vehicle, establish a new restaurant, and finance his marriage.

While 12 of Lukungu’s associates were apprehended and remanded to Luzira, Lukungu remained at large until his recent arrest in Masaka City by Crime Intelligence operatives. Hajji Lumolo has contested the ownership of the money, stating that it represented payments for SUVs supplied to government departments and other organizations.

Speaking at a thanksgiving event for Ms. Nekesa in Masafu Town Council, Busia District, Hajji Lumolo clarified that he had left the money at home due to his rush to catch a flight abroad. He emphasized the significant value of the vehicles he deals with, estimating each to cost between Shs500m and Shs700m.

Hajji Lumolo refuted social media speculation suggesting that Ms. Nekesa held party funds at their residence. He alleged that the robbery was orchestrated by their security detail and expressed relief that his wife surrendered the money to the robbers, potentially saving her life.

Ms. Nekesa recounted the traumatic experience of the robbery, describing her futile attempts to activate security alarms and the swift breach of her home’s security measures by the assailants. She attributed her survival to divine intervention.

Religious leaders present at the event commended Ms. Nekesa’s safety, with Archdeacon Rev George Stephen Nsoigo expressing gratitude for her protection. The Busia District Khadi, Hajji Jamil Juma Obandyo, dispelled earlier misconceptions regarding the stolen funds, offering prayers for Ms. Nekesa’s well-being.

Despite Ms. Nekesa's affiliation with the NRM, representatives from various political parties attended the prayers. Busia Resident District Commissioner, Mr. Michael Kibwika, reiterated trust in Ms. Nekesa, while former State Minister for East African Community (EAC) Affairs, Mr. Julius Maganda, acknowledged her advocacy efforts for projects in Busia District.
