Gareth Southgate maybe managing the England national men's team for the last time if he fails to win the Euro 24 tournament, he admitted it himself.
He revealed that he wouldn't be the England manager anymore should his side fail to secure the trophy as the country has waited for 58 years for a trophy.
He said the following during a press conference;
If we don't win, I probably won't be here anymore. Then it might be the last chance. I think about half of the national coaches leave after a tournament - that's the nature of international football. I've been here for almost eight years now and we've come close. So I know that you can't keep standing in front of the public and saying: "Please do a little more", because at some point people will lose faith in your message. If we want to be a big team and I want to be a top coach, then you have to deliver in the big moments.
He was also asked a few other questions.
Question; Mr. Southgate, what is your relationship with Germany like?
He replied;
I associate a lot of pain with Germany.
Question; You mention your missed penalty in the semi-final against Germany at the 1996 European Championship. Could you finally put this tragedy behind you if England won the title in Germany of all places?
He replied;
No, because for the guys I played with back then, and also for the coach who sadly passed away last year, it was their personal chance. It's not just about me. I also don't think it was the fault of the players who missed the penalties in the European Championship final against Italy in 2021. After all, we had 120 minutes to win the game beforehand. The older I get, the more I understand that. I used to have this stupid idea in my head that 1996 was all my fault. But you have that feeling inside you, and it will probably never completely change.
He also talked about how the loss in the final at Wembley in 1996 is different from the one of 2021. He said the following;
It's different because in '96 it was a personal pain, but in 2021 I felt like I had a responsibility for the whole country. In '96 there was probably more understanding from the public. In '21 I felt more criticism - as if the whole thing, the togetherness for a month, was suddenly gone.
