During the largely publicised donation from city tycoon, Hamis Kiggundu last week , a war almost erupted between him and Uganda's new prime minister, Robinah Nabbanja.
Hamis contributed half a billion Ugandan shillings to the government of Uganda in order for it to procure vaccines for him and his staff together with the Ugandan people.
He said, 5000 of his employees from Ham Group of Companies of which he is CEO were to receive the procured vaccines and 10000 lucky Ugandans would take the remaining balance.
So on Friday morning last week is when the tycoon drove all the way to the Office of the Prime Minister in Kampala to deliver the big amounts of cash in front of TV cameras.
According to viba sources, its not that he was showing off to the public but it was a move to entice the rest of the private sector in Uganda to contribute towards the cause of Covid-19.
How did Hamis and Nabbanja clash
During the lavish display of the entire UGX. 530 million (over half a billion) is where problems between Nabbanja and Hamis started to escalate.
After Nabbanja had happily received the money infront of journalists, she started to disagree with Hamis on how to deposit the money. Nabbanja said she received a phone call from the president himself that morning that advised her to prepare to receive money from Hamis.
Through that phone call , the president also told her to bank the money in an official government bank account to make sure the money is totally safe.
But Hamis had come with a different plan. The self made billionaire had come with a plan of pushing his money donation onto a certain Stanbic Bank account he had created.
The two, Hamis and Nabbanja then went for a closed door meeting to discuss on where to put the money and it's from the heated meeting which lasted several hours that the Prime Minister rejected Hamis' offer and instead opted to bank the money by herself.
Nabbanja who said she had a lot of soldiers protecting her, decided to go by herself to Stanbic bank Garden City branch in Kampala to credit the cash on the official government bank account.
But this was after pleading with the Managing director of Stanbic Bank to allow her access banking services because it was already late. The time was about 7pm when Nabbanja and her soldiers went to the bank and loaded all the cash on the account.
