While we await the ammendment of the social media misuse act as we were promised by the minister for ICT Hon. Chris Baryomunsi a few weeks back, the same minister has come out to talk about some talk shows and television programes and what some Ugandans want him to do.
The minister was presenting at the floor of parliament where he stated that them as the government don't want to limit the freedom of speech from Ugandans much as the the citizens are pushing government to the extreme.
"I have been approached by many Ugandans who have on several occasions requested me to ban some of the talkshows and also stop some panelists from appearing for these talkshows because of their toxic information they pass on while at these shows. But the government doesn't want to force sanctions on people. We don't want to shut their mouths." said minister Baryomunsi.
Many shows and talkshows have overtime been heavily criticized for passing on false information and for coming off as toxic but not many have been banned permanently. It is just of recent when the Uganda Communications Commision (UCC) adjusted airing time of most entertainment shows and instructed them to air starting at 10pm. This was, according to UCC, that these shows air explicit content at a time when kids are still awake which risks them being exposed to adult content at an early stage.
Should we expect cancellation of some talks shows and banning of some panelists or this is just another "barking dogs seldom bite" script?
