On this day, Buganda commemorates 54 years of Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II's rule, although his reign was parenthetically delayed for over two decades due to political instability in Uganda. Today marks the 30th anniversary since his official coronation on July 31st, 1993, a momentous occasion that saw him transition from a Prince to the revered Kabaka of Buganda.
Born on April 13th, 1955, at Mulago Hospital in Kampala, Kabaka Mutebi is the son of the late Kabaka Sir Edward Luwangula Muteesa II and Queen Mother Sarah Nalule Kisosonkole. Tragically, at the tender age of 14, he succeeded his father as Kabaka, following his father's alleged poisoning. However, the formalities essential to his ascent to the throne were delayed for 24 years until his official coronation at the historical Naggalabi-Buddo Hill in 1993.
During his exile in the UK, Kabaka Mutebi received both leadership training and formal education, and his return to Buganda saw him actively participating in the liberation struggle against President Obote's regime. His involvement in the struggle endeared him to the Baganda people, and when the NRA rebels emerged victorious, the Baganda had hope for the restoration of their monarchy.
Kabaka Mutebi's reign has been marked by efforts to restore Buganda's lost glory, as the kingdom had gradually lost authority and resources over the years. He declared his reign as an era of the youth and has been keen on bridging the gap between the monarchy and the younger generation.
Under the leadership of Charles Peter Mayiga as Katikkiro, the kingdom has engaged in corporate affairs and business ventures to generate income, significantly boosting its budget. While Buganda's political and economic power-sharing struggle with the central government continues, its relevance and attachment to the making of Uganda remain unquestioned.
Throughout his three-decade reign, Kabaka Mutebi has played a pivotal role in preserving Buganda's culture and heritage, as well as advocating for its restoration and recognition. His dedication to the kingdom and his people has earned him the love and respect of the Baganda, and his efforts continue to shape the legacy of his rule.
As Buganda celebrates the 30th anniversary of Kabaka Mutebi's rule, it is a moment to reflect on his transformative journey on the throne and his enduring commitment to preserving Buganda's identity and values. The Kabaka's legacy is boldly painted across the land, a testament to his profound impact on the history of Buganda.
