Last night, 30th July 2021, the president of Uganda, Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, opened Uganda like never before through his presidential address.
This address was meant to happen on Saturday 31st July but was pulled back to 30th after realisation that the 42-day lockdown was expiring on Friday 30th July.
This got so many worried, speculating that probably it is because the president wanted to add a whole lot of other days onto the lockdown to extend it further.
But to the shock of many, the man opened the entire country as I would say but according to him, it is ofcourse a partial opening.
Transport in all its forms, arcades, malls, inter-district travel and salons among other things were opened on condition that they follow all the standard operating procedures which by now are like song to many of you.
As the president gave his speech, some Ugandans were on intense pressure hoping for sectors concerning them to be opened while others whose sectors are ever closed were doing courageous things.
For example, the bar people whose sector is always announced as 'still closed' in each and everyone of Museveni's addresses on Corona virus.
Some of these bar people were too tired of the usual bad news to the extent of watching yesterday's address from the bar.
Although some things are opening on Monday 02 August, such as public transport of taxi and buses, majority of other things opened today.
Boda boda riders could be seen happily riding their passengers who are supposed to be only one in number as directed by the president and downtown Kampala was also seen with populations larger than what has been around in the past 42 days.
But why am I saying Museveni opened everything
Its clear he partially opened the country because sectors like education where the schools lie were left closed, religious places of worship also did not survive but believe it or not, the country is open as I speak.
This is because once public transport is opened, people are free to roam from place to place and knowing how mischievous Ugandans can be, all places that are declared closed are opened without permission but in a more silent manner.
For example those with their 2000 capacity weddings will hold them in very remote areas for example near Lake Victoria which makes it nearly impossible to enforce the 20 maximum capacity rule for weddings that Museveni mentioned in his speech yesterday.
