In the wake of a tragic car accident that claimed three lives, the National Unity Platform (NUP) has announced the postponement of their scheduled activities in Mityana.
The decision comes as the NUP pauses to mourn the victims and calls for a thorough investigation into the incident that occurred shortly after their convoy left Maya on Friday, May 31, 2024.
The NUP's announcement follows a highly successful rally in Masaka, where thousands of supporters defied numerous obstacles to show their commitment to the party's revolutionary message.
The NUP expressed profound gratitude to the people of Masaka for their unprecedented support.
"You sent a clear message to Gen. Museveni and his agents that you are determined as always, to stand on the right side of history," the NUP stated.
However, the celebration was marred by the tragic accident that led to the loss of three lives.
"We express deepest condolences to the families of three Ugandans who perished in an accident around Maya. We have established from onlookers that the accident happened after our convoy had left the scene,"
Urging the police to conduct efficient, independent, and expeditious investigations to establish the cause of the accident. In light of the tragedy, the NUP has reached out to the families of the deceased, offering support and condolences.
"In following with our tradition, we have reached out to the families of those who lost lives, some of whom were ardent supporters of NUP, and extended support to them," the statement read.
The NUP also responded to a police statement issued by Mr. Fred Enanga, the Uganda Police spokesperson who announced a ban on the party's activities following the accident.
The NUP criticized this move as partisan and illegal, highlighting the inconsistent enforcement of such bans against their party compared to other political groups.
"Regrettably, they continue to act in a clearly partisan manner," the NUP stated, noting that similar incidents involving other political groups have not led to such sweeping restrictions.Despite the challenges, the NUP reaffirmed its commitment to engaging with the police in a lawful manner. "
As we have demonstrated, we are open to engaging with the leadership of Uganda Police on any matter because we are law-abiding citizens," the statement emphasized.
In respect for the victims and their families, the NUP has decided to postpone their scheduled rally in Mityana, which was set for next week.
"We have decided to postpone our scheduled activity in Mityana next week as we mourn with the bereaved families. We shall put out a new schedule in due course,"
The party reassured its supporters that their campaign for change will continue. "Once again, we want to assure the people of Uganda that despite these challenges, the revolutionary train will reach them in all corners of the country - one way or another," the statement concluded.
The postponement of the Mityana rally underscores the NUP's dedication to honoring their supporters and prioritizing the well-being of the community. As the party navigates these difficult times, their commitment to a peaceful and just political process remains unwavering.
