With just hours left to finally put to rest former speaker of the 11th parliament, the late Jacob Oulanyah, who was also the member of parliament for Omoro country, the Electoral commission has announced the seat vaccant, and open for whoever wishes to take it on.
The EC spokesperson, Mr. Paul Bukenya informed the public that there's need to fill the position but this will be done after the burial of the late seat representative, which is today. "We have notified all registered political parties that we need to fill the vacancy but full program to be released after burial of former speaker Jacob Oulanyah." said Mr. Bukenya.
The late Oulanyah first became MP of Omoro in the 2001-05 term, and later retained the seat from 2011 until the day of his death. NUP spokesperson and MP Nakawa East, Hon. Joel Ssenyonyi said that as a party, they are aware of the need to fill the seat and are going to prepare a candidate.
"We are discussing among us to see how to prepare for that seat and we know we shall get a candidate for that place. As the Constitution mandates us, we have to go for a by-election and we are people who follow the law" said Ssenyonyi
Will the seat be taken by the late's child/relative as we have seen in the past for other MPs who die in office and are replaced by family members or it will be a different story this time round?
