The political gospel of National Unity Platform (NUP) being a Buganda region Party and for Baganda has since the national elections that happened last year been growing. The gospel grew more powerful when the party (NUP) swept literally all political offices in the central region, from Local Council to Member of Parliament.
Many of the defeated NRM members rode on this narrative for a while, painting NUP as a tribalistic party fand that it would not go farther. Fast forward, the Omoro county bye-elections are on next week on Thursday and the momentum keeps growing day by day.
In what seemed like a walk over for the NRM, who fronted the late Jacob Oulanyah's son, Andrew Ojok Oulanyah as the flag barer, it turns out he'll not have a smooth ride, as he's now contensting with five other opposition flag barers. Among these NUP's Simon Toolit Akecha, Oscar Kizza of ANT, FDC's Justine Odong and others.
About two days back, NRM's general secretary Richard Todwong released photos showing 100 converts who had swithced from NUP to NRM and were ready to vote for Andrew Oulanyah. Much as this seemed surprising, given the fact that for a long time, the NRM team has been labeling NUP as a Buganda party, one wonders where these 100 converts came from.
With all these going on, NUP party president Robert Kyagulanyi yesterday touched down in Omoro, to campaign for the party's flag barer Toolit Aketcha. Kyagulanyi was received with massive crowds, both young and old.
"Much as we reached late in Omoro, we found many people waiting for us. I thank the people of Moro for welcoming and showing us this much love and also to our flag barer. It is no surprise that the police showed cowardice as usual and started arresting our supporters and mobilizers." Said Kyagulanyi in his social media post. Should we expect opposition victory in Omoro or the NRM is assured of victory?
