While giving his speech as the guest of honor at the official commemoration of National Teachers Day at the Kololo independence grounds earlier today, president Yoweri Kaguta Museveni continued to stamp his love for sciences over the arts.
Among the topics of discussion were the increment of salaries for both arts and science teachers, which according to him is not okay. "The argument that the teachers of English should also be paid more because the sciences are taught in English are faulty. First, pay the experts, and then the HR can come later.
These experts are not many. We can pay them well first, and when the economy recovers, everybody joins. There is a good school in Soroti, Soroti Flying School, that was about to collapse because they were first paying HR. Can the HR fly the plane?" - President Museveni
The president went on to liken the teachers' situation to his salary and that of government officials. "Mr. Baguma says when the science teachers are paid more, it will destabilize authority in schools. I am the President of Uganda, and I earn UGX 3 million. I hear that there are public servants who earn over UGX 50 million." - President Museveni
So, to all the arts teachers and students of the arts, the main man has shown once again what his priorities are. But please wear your mask as we await to hit the 4million vaccination target.
