Phrases you should stop saying immediately.
    • August 29, 2023 • 1 year ago

Am pretty sure there is a certain phrase someone out there told you and it got you thinking “ How dare he/she say this to me?” . It has happened to the best of us.

There are phrases that are better left unsaid rather than getting on someone’s nerves. Even when a few of them may sound polite, you will realize after careful consideration that they are a totally not that polite.

If you are fond of using such phrases with people around you, I suggest that you think critically about a statement before you use it. It could be at work, having a conversation with a friend or something similar.

Think carefully a out the phrases you use with people around you in order to avoid putting bot yourself and the other person on a  awkward position.

It may sound unrealistic when I say there are phrases you should stop saying immediately but do hear me out. In most cases, you do not even like it when these phrases come from someone else, directed at you.

What makes you think there is a polite way you can  say the same phrase that you hated hearing from someone else?

    Below are the most common annoying phrases that you should avoid;

    Offensive

Phrases you should stop saying immediately.

    With All due respect.

If no one ever told you, I will tell you today. The amount of disrespect that follows the statement “with all due respect" is immeasurable.

It is a statement that very many people use just to cover up or sugar coat the disrespectful statements they plan on throwing at you in that instant. It is more of an excuse for being disrespectful towards the other party.

If you use this phrase just because you believe it tones down the disrespect, well it does not. It  totally makes it worse. It is a out time that you stopped using this phrase if you have been using it.

    Don’t take it personally.

How am I supposed not to take it personally? This statement is also just an excuse that people use so as not to sound too disrespectful. How am I supposed not to take it personally when you have clearly stated it to attack me personally?

If you use this phrase, then you are just trying to take the guilt off your chest. You have said something that you clearly know is offensive to someone and your getting it off your shoulder by simply telling the other person not to take it personally. Is that even possible? If you use ths phrase often, it’s high time you stopped.

    Everything Happens for a reason.

If someone comes to you, pours their heart out to you, that means they need consolation from you. Why would you hit someone with the classic “everything happens for a reason".

Does that make it hurt a y less? And if there is a reason for something happening, then why don’t you provide the reason along with this lame excuse?

If you use this phrase to console someone, I suggest you drop it. Instead of telling some one that there is a reason for their suffering, be there for them instead!

    Offensive

    Don’t sweat about small things.

We are different people and we have to appreciate that we were built differently. What may look like peanuts to you may actually mean a great deal to someone else and this is something you must a knowledge. If a person is going through a stressful period, it may not look all that important to you.

Well, I suggest that you do not let that person know how small their issue is, most especially when  you witness that they are suffering over it.

Do not tell someone not to stress over something small because it may mean a great deal to them, even more than you could ever imagine.

    Be your own hero.

Whoever started this phrase must have been out of their mind. Everyone needs someone to look up to and everyone definitely needs a hero that they can look up to, a hero that always has their back or supports them through everything. Do not tell a person to be their own hero because you have no idea whether they are even strong enough to.

    Thank you in advance.

This is outright manipulation. It usually comes about after you give someone a hectic task and you know very well that it will be difficult to execute. But since you want to impose it on someone else, you thank them in advance, knowing that they would feel bad mannered if they say no after you thanked them in advance.

How manipulative! If you believe you are doing this out of politeness, please stop using this phrase because it is downright manipulative!

‘This is probably a silly question.’

No it is not. You just want to sound polite by downplaying your own question. You feel like Your question wont be acknowledged or received well so you downplay it yourself just in case it is downplayed by someone else. Stop being too humble a d drop this phrase. Whatever question you want to ask, ask away unapologetically.

    Whatever.

This is so annoying. To some people, it has become just another phrase so they feel it is okay to just drop it on people. It is not okay. Stop saying whatever when someone approaches you to tell you about something. It makes them feel worthless and they will feel like whatever they want to tell you is irrelevant.

    I told you so.

If someone approaches you to tell you about something they are going through, it does not matter whether you had warned them about this particular thing. They do not deserve that ‘I told you so'. This person is seeking consolation but instead, by telling them this phrase you are offering nothing but criticism!

    Frequently Asked Questions

Why you should stop saying it is what it is?

This phrase is worrying because it is far more than an autopilot response people use; it is a complete mentality. The basic meaning behind these words is that we are unable to change our circumstances. All situations are concrete and any attempts we make to fix them would be pointless

What is a saying that doesn't make sense?

Don't Cry Over Spilt Milk. This expression means it's useless getting upset about things that have happened and you can't change, like spilled milk, for example.

    When are words meaningless quotes?

If they are used in such a way that no sharp conclusions can be drawn.

What is the most important thing in life is to stop saying?

I wish. The most important thing in life is to stop saying 'I wish' and start saying 'I will. ' Consider nothing impossible, then treat possibilities as probabilities.

What type of person says it is what it is?

He or she has clear acceptance of the situation. But during my research, I found that some people who use this phrase a lot were sometimes inwardly saying 'I don't have the power to change it, so, just accept it. That's the way the world rolls.
