About a week after the National Drug Authority (NDA) gave green lights to the miraculous drug Covidex to be used in treatment of Covid-19, the the battle for ownership has since been growing and it's taking legal turns.
Initially, the drug is known to have been made by Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST) proffessor, Patrick Ogwang. However, the department of health, the university and Ogwang himself are battling for the drug's ownership.
Earlier today, Mbarara University through its lawyer G. William Alenyo have come out to sue prof Ogwang, claiming that he has no rights to Covidex, siting that all the materials used, facilities and funds were for the university hence making the drug a university property.
On the other hand, Prof. Ogwang insists he owns all the rights to the drug and says its his invention which he gave out to save Ugandans. While appearing before press, Ogwang warned the university against illegally using 3 of his inventions, among which is Covidex.
He says the university is illegally earning money from these inventions without his permission. Needless to say, the government in June came out to also claim ownership of the drug.
Question is, who is the rightful owner of the highly sought after Covidex?
