Kampala, Uganda | Uganda will be sending a delegation of 300 local artisans to participate in an 11-day local innovations expo in South Sudan. This marks the 24th edition of the East African local innovations expo and the first time it will be held in South Sudan.
The Ugandan representatives will showcase a diverse range of products, including household items, personal care products, beverages, machinery, and more, all sourced locally.
At the flag-off ceremony for the delegation, James Magode, the State Minister for East African Affairs, highlighted the importance of the expo for fostering regional integration. He stated that events like this help unite the people of East Africa and encourage collaborative efforts toward common goals.
Magode also emphasized the opportunity this expo provides to highlight the talents within micro, small, and medium enterprises, as well as to learn from neighboring countries. “Innovation must be nurtured; without such platforms, creativity can stagnate. We should actively engage in creative endeavors,” he noted.
He further underlined the significance of these initiatives for advancing the vision of East African federation, as they promote local and regional innovation through shared knowledge and experiences.
Henry Walusimbi, one of the exhibitors, expressed his excitement about visiting South Sudan for the first time after participating in this event for two decades. “I believe there will be a substantial market in Juba, especially with over 1.5 million Ugandans living in South Sudan,” he said.
Another exhibitor, Shiba Karamagonza, shared her enthusiasm for showcasing her products internationally. She noted that the government is covering all expenses for the trip, leaving exhibitors responsible only for their accommodations.
Having previously exhibited in Burundi, Karamagonza feels better prepared this time and is optimistic about generating more sales, applying lessons learned from her past experiences.
Uganda’s involvement in the 24th Jua Kali Expo in South Sudan highlights its dedication to innovation and regional collaboration. This inaugural event not only opens new markets for Ugandan exhibitors but also strengthens East African integration, reflecting a collective commitment to self-reliance and economic partnership.
