The term Egaali is used to describe a Musician’s entourage or gang that follows this particular musician wherever they go, purposely for security and support.
According to everything that has been going on social media very many people are starting to come out whilst stating all the disadvantages associated with these gangs. Many have come out to state that these gangs are causing unrest amongst musicians as they consist of people that are highly violent and in most cases very disrespectful.
Many however have also come out to argue that for their own security as well as for moral support, the Egaali is quite necessary for certain musicians. In most cases, if you look at these gangs critically, they are also consisting of upcoming artistes, whom some people believe are trying to tap into the fame of their already established ring leaders.
Musician Bucha Man has given a more detailed preview regarding this while stating that the issue of egaali has not just flourished but rather it is their mischief that has escalated to the point of garnering social media attention. Bucha man stated that Egaali was common even way back as he was part of one himself. He recalls Firebase crew being Bobi Wine's egaali and Bebe Cool had Gagamel while Jose Chameleone had Leone Island.
These three camps were also known for having beef on each other just like we see musicians nowadays for instance Pallaso, Alien Skin and Fik Gaza with their crews. Bucha Man states that the egaali is already part of the music industry so it could be hard to abolish at this rate. He stated that egaali needs a good commander and if the commander or ring leader is weak, that could pose a threat because the ring leader needs to be someone everyone listens to, which the only way to promote discipline within the crew.
Bucha man believes that everyone with in the crew should know how to defend themselves because you could diss someone while with your crew but you later meet them alone and start throwing punches at each other. According to him, Firebase Crew was good at training and everyone could throw punches even when met by an enemy all alone. He stated that they were trained by professionals.
“This is what true leadership is. You need to be a strong commander if you are to lead egaali effectively. You also need to know how to defend yourself even without the entire entourage, if you are attacked you should be ready to throw punches all the time. At Firebase crew we used to be trained by coaches all the time. Every day was war with Gagamel and Leone Island crews at large,” he said.
Bucha Man stated he is not happy with the way egaali operates nowadays because they lack discipline and the things they should do secretly are out here being posted on social media.
“We used to do these things secretly. It is however not the case today. I see them confronting each other in public and fighting each other. Back then, we would meet in ghettos, fight it out and move on. Sometimes news may have leaked but most times, news never even got out.” Bucha Man said in an interview with Sanyuka TV
