During the #CriminalaReport2021, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Okoth Martin Ochola gave statistics about the reported crimes of last year and 2019 that left some Ugandans scratching their ears and wondering if they had heard him properly.
According to Ochola, Uganda Police recorded only 195,931 cases last year compared to 215,224 cases that we're recorded in 2019. This equates to an 8.9%
Just to give you a recap, last year saw Ugandans spend the longest time of their lives at home, thanks to covid-19 which forced the whole world into a lockdown. Nevertheless, crimes like theft, gender based violence, road accidents among others were on the rise.
Then came the election campaigns that were filled with arrests, teargas, beatings and killings. Not forgetting the three day riots in November sparked off by the arrest of opposition stronghold Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu.
Ochola also said road accident cases reduced from 12,858 cases in 2019 to 12,249 cases in 2020. Maybe it was because of the banning of movement during lockdown.
