A tragic road accident involving multiple vehicles and motorcycles has claimed three lives, prompting an investigation by the Nsangi Police. The incident occurred during a procession for the National Unity Platform (NUP) President Robert Kyagulanyi Sentamu, alias Bobi Wine en route to a rally in Masaka.
The collision involved a Toyota Hiace (registration number UBQ 691Q), a Toyota Noah (registration number UAT 157A), and four motorcycles: UFY 983T, UGC 381C (Bajaj Boxer), UEJ 361D (Bajaj), and UFY 465Y (Bajaj Boxer Red).
The accident resulted in the immediate deaths of the rider and passenger of motorcycle UFY 465Y at the scene. Their bodies have been transported to City Mortuary Mulago for postmortem examinations.
Another victim, initially rushed to Mulago Hospital with critical injuries, has succumbed to their injuries, bringing the total number of deceased to three. The police are actively working to identify the victims and assess the conditions of those who were taken to various hospitals.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the accident was caused by the reckless driving of the Toyota Hiace, which was part of the National Unity Platform procession. The Hiace collided with the Toyota Noah and subsequently hit several motorcycles, resulting in the fatalities. Eyewitnesses reported that the Hiace was speeding and lost control, leading to the catastrophic chain of events.
The drivers of the impounded vehicles fled the scene and are currently at large. The Nsangi Police have secured both the Toyota Hiace and the Toyota Noah at the station and are making efforts to apprehend the drivers involved.
"We are deeply saddened by this tragic incident and extend our condolences to the families of the victims," said police spokesperson, Luke Oweyesigire. "We urge the National Unity Platform to exercise greater caution during processions to prevent such unfortunate events in the future."
The Nsangi Police have called on any witnesses to come forward with information that could aid in the investigation. The authorities are also working closely with NUP to ensure that proper safety measures are implemented during future processions and rallies.
As the investigation progresses, further details will be provided to the public. The police have assured the community that they are committed to finding the individuals responsible for this tragedy and bringing them to justice.
