BREAKING: Archbishop Emeritus Paul Kamuza Bakyenga dies at 79
    • July 18, 2023 • 2 years ago

The Catholic community mourns the loss of Archbishop Emeritus Paul Kamuza Bakyenga, who passed away at the age of 79.

The news of his demise was confirmed by Rev Fr Charles Mutabaruka, the communications director of the Mbarara Archdiocese. Archbishop Bakyenga breathed his last at Nsambya Hospital in Kampala, where he was undergoing his routine medical check-ups. Further details regarding the circumstances of his passing will be shared at a later time.

Born in Bumbaire, Igara, Bushenyi district in 1944, Archbishop Bakyenga dedicated his life to a distinguished career in the clergy. He served as a priest for 52 years and as a bishop for 34 years, leaving an indelible mark on the Catholic Church in Uganda. Ordained as a priest in Mbarara in 1971 at the young age of 27, he displayed a deep commitment to his faith and a passion for serving the community.

At the age of 44, Archbishop Bakyenga was appointed as the Coadjutor Bishop of Mbarara, positioning him to succeed Bishop John Baptist Kakubi. In 1991, when Bishop Kakubi retired at the age of 61, Archbishop Bakyenga took on the mantle of Bishop of Mbarara, assuming leadership of the diocese. Under his guidance, the Mbarara Diocese was elevated to an archdiocese in 1999, and he became its first Archbishop.

As the Archbishop of Mbarara, he shouldered the responsibility of overseeing the Western ecclesiastical province, which encompasses the dioceses of Hoima, Fort Portal, Kasese, and Kabale.

Throughout his tenure, Archbishop Bakyenga provided spiritual guidance, pastoral care, and a beacon of hope to the faithful within the region. His leadership and unwavering dedication to his religious duties have left an indelible impact on the Catholic community.

Archbishop Bakyenga's retirement in 2020 marked the end of an era filled with devoted service to the church and the people. After several decades of unwavering devotion, he passed on the baton to his successor, Lambert Bainomugisha, entrusting the future of the archdiocese to capable hands.

The news of Archbishop Emeritus Bakyenga's passing has sent shockwaves through the Catholic community, prompting an outpouring of tributes and prayers for the repose of his soul. His loss will be deeply felt, as he leaves behind a legacy of faith, compassion, and leadership. The faithful and the clergy alike are united in mourning the departure of a beloved shepherd, whose life and ministry have touched countless lives in Mbarara and beyond.

As the community gathers to honor the memory of Archbishop Bakyenga, his profound impact on the spiritual lives of many will be remembered, and his teachings and guidance will continue to inspire generations to come. May his soul rest in eternal peace.
