The Deputy Secretary General of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party, Rt. Hon. Rose Namayanja Nsereko, has called on the residents of Luuka district and the wider Busoga region to actively participate in government programs aimed at uplifting the socio-economic standards of the populace.
Namayanja made this appeal during a fundraising event held on June 1 for the construction of the Busalamu Seventh Day Adventist Church in Butondolo village, Luuka district.Speaking to a gathering that included local leaders and community members, Namayanja emphasized the significance of the Parish Development Model (PDM) program, commending Luuka district for its commendable performance in implementing the initiative.
The PDM aims to channel financial resources directly to the grassroots, targeting the 39% of Ugandans who are currently outside the money economy.
"Embrace PDM and other government programs. It has never happened in any African country where the government can take money up to the grassroots. The shs1m can be a good startup for anyone because it targets the 39% Ugandans who are not in the money economy," Namayanja stated.
In a demonstration of her commitment to community development, Namayanja donated shs2 million and 100 bags of cement to aid in the construction of the church, underscoring her support for local initiatives and the role of religious institutions in societal development.
However, Namayanja also issued a stern warning against corruption, urging the community to follow proper procedures when accessing funds from government programs.
She highlighted the importance of transparency and accountability, particularly in the allocation of funds meant for women, youth, and other vulnerable groups.
"There is a percentage for women, youths, and others, so kindly use that percentage and be the primary monitors of this program. If you are to get shs1 million, then why do you sign for a million and they give you less?" she questioned,
The community to remain vigilant against corrupt practices. The event, which saw a significant turnout, was organized at the invitation of Mr. Don Vincent Bwana, the head of the protocol department at the NRM national secretariat Kyambogo and a hopeful candidate for the Luuka South MP seat. Bwana also emphasized the importance of education and called on parents to prioritize schooling over child labor, particularly in sugarcane cutting.
"Educate your children and avoid involving them in child labor. Education is the only gift any parent can give to a child," Namayanja echoed,
Reinforcing the message of investing in the future generation. The Deputy SG's visit and her message were well-received, with many attendees expressing their readiness to support and participate in government programs aimed at fostering development and reducing poverty in the region.
