Having lost out to hosts Rwanda in the quater finals on Wednesday evening at the BK Arena stadium in Kigali, Uganda's Basketball Team Gazelles had to face off West Africa's Guinea in a one-off match that ended 85-44 in favor of the Gazeles.
The win saw the Gazelles record their highest finish since thethey started participating in the tournament, breaking their 2015 record 10th finish.
Much as the girls didn't win silverware, the coach, Alberto Antuna was so impressed with the performance.
“It’s massive for us… After nine years we came here [to AfroBasket] and we are 7th in Africa. We played very good basketball and everyone that came saw we have an identity,” she said after the match.
Notable mentions include Janon Otto, who gave an outstanding performance throughout the tournament. She's also set to finish as tournament's topscorer if everything remains the way it is. Otto finished off with 21points, the highest for the Gazelles.
Jane Asinde has also been a brilliant player throughout the tournament, almost registering similar figures per game with teammate Janon. “This tournament has been a great opportunity for me to be able to play for and represent Uganda. It has been amazing to play with the girls and we can only build on what we have,” She said after the Guinea match.
