The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has urged the High Court to reject the bail application filed by Molly Katanga, the prime suspect in the murder of her husband, Henry Katanga. Molly appeared before Justice Isaac Muwata via Zoom from Luzira Women’s Prison, seeking bail through her legal team, including Peter Kabatsi, McDusman Kabega, Jet Tumwebaze, Bruce Musinguzi, and Ellison Karuhanga.
Molly Katanga's bail application was supported by her nephew, Dr. Patrick Kabayo, retired civil servant Rtd. Gen. Emmanuel Burundi Nyamwanisa, her cousin and businessman Geoffrey Kamuntu, and State Minister for Health Hon. Margaret Muhanga. The defense lawyers argued her innocence, emphasizing her need for specialized medical care due to injuries sustained before her remand, which they claim cannot be adequately provided in prison.
The defense highlighted Molly's fixed abode in Mbuya I, Mbuya Hill village, Nakawa Division, and her lack of previous criminal record. They assured the court that Molly would not interfere with the ongoing investigations or witnesses. Additionally, they emphasized her role as the sole breadwinner for her family, including a dependent child.
However, the prosecution, led by Jonathan Muwaganya and Samalie Wakooli, opposed the application, citing concerns over the age and status of the sureties. They pointed out that one surety, Kamuntu, was under investigation for obstructing police investigations in the case.
Muwaganya also raised issues regarding Molly's previous failure to comply with court processes and the potential risk of her obstructing justice, given her previous actions. He argued that the deployment of Special Forces Command (SFC) officers to protect Molly while she was admitted at IHK hospital impeded police investigations.
The court was informed that Molly's daughters, Patrica Kakwanzi and Martha Nkwazi, along with the family's shamba boy George Amanyire and male nurse Charles Otai, are also implicated in the case as accessories after the murder. They were granted bail in February 2024. The ruling on Molly's bail application has been scheduled for April 9th or 10th.
Mrs. Molly Katanga has been on wanted since early November 2023. The Prosecution alleges that she murdered her husband, Henry Katanga on November 2, 2023 at their matrimonial home in Mbuya Kampala. The prosecution argues that Molly’s DNA was found on the trigger, and the cartridges matched the pistol recovered at the scene. They further accuse her daughters and others in play of destroying evidence related to the murder in question.
