The NUP Camp has recently been fired up by the selection of a candidate for the Kawempe North Parliamentary Seat. As many people came out and showed interest in this seat, NUP had the biggest number of people who expressed the desire to take over this seat.
With the highest number of people under one party, many were keeping their eyes peeled, wondering who the Party was going to give their support to take place in the general selection process for the Kawempe North Member of Parliament.
Well, it seems like this whole scenario has not left people the same! For instance, former Kawempe South MP Mubarak Munyagwa has come out to show his dissatisfaction as he criticized the National Unity Platform (NUP) leader Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu a.k.a Bobi Wine, accusing him of being a failure in regards to practicing Democracy in his own Political party.
While speaking on NBS Television on a show dubbed NBS Eagle Which is hosted by Adam Kungu, Munyagwa claimed that the selection process for the Kawempe North parliamentary ticket was not transparent at all considering that all these candidates were paraded before everyone but at the end of the day, the only people who called the shots on who was to represent NUP were a small top chain.
“One of the things I don't like about NUP is that they keep pretending to be a democratic party yet they are not. Every decision is made by a small group of people at the top. The truth therefore is that the debate for aspirants was nothing but a show because at the end of the day, the Firebase high command will decide who gets the ticket. It all comes back to them," Munyagwa stated
According to Munyagwa, it is undeniable that several aspirants were most likely to come out feeling cheated because of the final decision made by NUP. According to him therefore, this is enough for him to cast doubt on NUP’s internal democracy.
And according to Rogers Mulindwa who was representing the ruling party, National Resistance Movement (NRM), there does seem to be any ongoing wrangles in the NUP camp. He however also cited a few divisions regarding the candidate selection for Kawempe North stating that these few struggles weaken NUP and make it easier for NRM to win the seat.
However, he also defended NUP’s approach, saying the party is working towards a change in Uganda’s long-standing political system.
