Mao Challenges Museveni to Lead Peaceful Power Transition

Constitutional Affairs Minister and Democratic Party (DP) President, Norbert Mao, has issued a compelling challenge to President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, urging him to take the lead in facilitating a peaceful and orderly transfer of power in Uganda.

Addressing DP supporters during grassroots mobilization efforts in Jinja city over the weekend, Mao emphasized that Uganda has a history of turbulent power transitions, often marked by violence and bloodshed. He underscored the urgent need for President Museveni to deviate from this historical pattern and set a new precedent.

Mao commended Museveni for his role in spearheading economic transformation in various sectors of the country, acknowledging that this legacy could be further enhanced by fostering a peaceful transition of power.

"Uganda is in dire need of a peaceful change of leadership. While we celebrate the stability in our country, we also yearn for a peaceful transition," stated Mao.

He urged Museveni to consider this as an opportunity to secure his legacy for future generations while safeguarding Uganda's impressive development achievements under his leadership.

Highlighting the turmoil of previous political transitions in Uganda, including those in 1971, 1979, 1985, and 1986, Mao stressed the negative impact on both local and international fronts. This, he said, has motivated him to actively engage in the pursuit of peaceful power handover and called for collective support from DP and all Ugandans worldwide to realize this crucial objective.

Mao also acknowledged that while some political entities are focusing on electoral processes, DP is engaged in negotiations aimed at achieving sustainable power change without bloodshed. He expressed optimism that if their voices are heard, it could lead to a peaceful and harmonious transition of leadership that benefits all Ugandans.

Additionally, Mao implored President Museveni to tackle social issues plaguing the nation, such as corruption and tribalism, which have hindered Uganda's overall progress. He criticized certain government elements for using excessive power to deprive the majority of Ugandans from enjoying the fruits of national development.

Meanwhile, Ismael Kiirya, President of Uganda Young Democrats, issued a call to all youths across the country to redirect their efforts towards acquiring the knowledge and skills needed to participate actively in peaceful power transitions, thus avoiding any form of bloodshed.

The challenge posed by Minister Norbert Mao reflects the growing desire among Ugandans for a peaceful transition of power and the need for leaders to embrace this opportunity for the betterment of the nation. The call comes at a critical juncture in Uganda's political landscape, and its outcome could shape the country's future in profound ways.
