Kapchorwa, Uganda | Isaac Masai, a long-distance runner with Uganda Prisons, clinched victory at the National Mountain Running Championships held in Kapchorwa on Saturday. He completed the 10-kilometer race in 39 minutes and 54 seconds.
Masai was followed closely by Elijah Cheptoek from the Arua Athletics Association, who finished in 40 minutes and 2 seconds, while marathoner Fred Musobo secured third place with a time of 40 minutes and 24 seconds.
The race saw Masai, along with this year’s silver and bronze medalists, break away from a group of six athletes vying for the podium. The trio maintained their lead until 9.5 kilometers, when Masai unleashed a strong finishing sprint to claim the championship.
Reflecting on his victory, Masai noted the challenges of the trail but credited his endurance and determination for his success. “I’m thrilled that my dream of winning in the mountains has come true. This is my first major win, and it gives me hope for future races,” he said.
In the women’s category, Saibi Chebet from Uganda Prisons took the top spot, finishing in 47 minutes. She outpaced Patricia Chekwemoi of the Uganda Police Athletics Club, who finished in 49 minutes and 55 seconds, while Angeline Chelimo came in third at 50 minutes and 22 seconds.
Chebet attributed her success to focused preparation for mountain racing. “Training has been tough, especially since many athletes avoid mountain sessions, but I’m grateful to God for my health and this championship win,” she said.
Benjamin Njia, the national coach and vice president of technical affairs at the Uganda Athletics Federation, explained that this year’s race was not intended to select a team for international competitions but to fulfill the federation’s calendar and provide athletes with valuable experience as they prepare for the selection race in 2025. “It’s essential that we complete all events approved by World Athletics,” he stated.
