The opposition National Unity Platform (NUP) has been forced to revise its schedule for the Buganda region mobilization meetings, following advice from the police regarding the convenience of previously booked venues. The first meeting, originally set to take place in Mukono Municipality today, has been canceled.
According to Robert Kyagulanyi Sentamu, alias Bobi Wine, the leader of National Unity Platform, the party’s meetings will now commence tomorrow. The subsequent meetings will take place at Recreation Grounds in Masaka on Friday, May 31st, and at Busimbi Division Grounds in Mityana on Tuesday, June 4th.
"The police claimed that the venues we had initially booked are not convenient, even when other political groups have been using them. They even declined our request to use Liberation Square in Masaka City, which has hosted numerous political events," Kyagulanyi stated in a post on X (formerly Twitter). "In the greater interest of ensuring that our events happen successfully, we have made these adjustments and secured new venues."
The Police deputy spokesperson, Claire Nabakka, issued a statement following a meeting between the police and NUP leadership held at Naguru yesterday. The meeting resolved several issues, including the requirement for NUP to notify the Inspector General of Police (IGP) officially and well in advance, as per the law, to allow the Uganda Police Force (UPF) management to respond in a timely manner.
Additionally, the police urged the National Unity Platform leadership to address the issue of their members wearing military attire, which contravenes the law.
"The NUP leadership will provide a liaison officer whose role will be to coordinate with Police Headquarters and Unit Commanders regarding preparations for holding their activities and following up on security concerns from the party," ACP Nabakka stated.
Despite the adjustments, Robert Kyagulanyi emphasized the party's commitment to holding the mobilization meetings. The changes aim to ensure the events are conducted smoothly, adhering to the police's advisories. The NUP's efforts to mobilize in the Buganda region are part of a broader campaign to strengthen its presence and support base ahead of future political activities.
The National Unity Platform ability to adapt to these changes underscores the party's resilience and determination to engage with its supporters, despite the logistical challenges presented by the police's advisories.
