Uganda Medical Association (UMA) president Dr. Samuel Odongo Oledo has come out inform the nationa that the strike for doctors has not been called off as earlier purpoted by some ministers, "On a special note, I apologize on behalf of the ministers who spoke on our behalf when they were not sent to say that industrial action was called off, it was not right and uncalled for. We speak as the custodians of the leaders of doctors countrywide." Said Dr. Odongo
He went on to say that they (doctors) are open to continuous further engagement with the government only if minimum deliveries are given so they can go back to to their jobs while the rest of the issues are handled systematically.
Some of the most pressing issues that are keeping doctors on strike include payment for interns, medical vehicles and tax waivers which according to Dr. Odongo don't need to be passed in the parliament because they were already passed.
"The compasation for the health workers who died while treating Covid-19 patients is still pending, the 4bn SACCO money not released, so doctors sent us as their leaders that until those conditions are met, they're still remaining home."
With the Omnicron variant looming, and the frustration of doctors still growing, in case another medical insurgance befalls the nation, will the health workers be motivated to avail their services with this kind of on and off situation?
