More than 90,000 Yaka prepaid electricity users in Uganda could face additional expenses after failing to meet the software upgrade deadline set by Umeme, the country’s power distribution company. The deadline, which expired yesterday, November 24, was aimed at updating the technology in Yaka meters to ensure continued functionality and improve services.
The upgrade, described as crucial by Umeme, transitions Uganda's prepaid metering system to the Standard Transfer Specification (STS), a modern technology that simplifies electricity payments and allows seamless switching between utility providers. According to Mr. Peter Kaujju, Umeme’s spokesperson, the process was largely successful, with 95 percent of the 2.15 million Yaka users completing the update.
“We successfully upgraded more than 95 percent of the meters on our network,” Mr. Peter Kaujju said in an interview. “However, for the remaining 4.19 percent who did not comply, their meters will no longer communicate with our systems. This means they cannot generate or key in tokens, rendering the meters unusable.”
Customers who failed to meet the deadline will now have to purchase new meters, which come at an additional cost. Mr. Kaujju explained that the new meters would address the limitations of the outdated technology while providing enhanced functionalities such as improved power usage tracking and efficiency.
“For those who didn’t roll over by the set deadline, acquiring a new meter will be the only option,” Mr. Peter Kaujju stated, adding that Umeme is prepared to assist affected customers during the transition.
Despite the company’s assurances, some customers expressed frustration with the upgrade process. Complaints ranged from a lack of communication to the feeling of being rushed. “I never received any message from Umeme about the upgrade and now I might have to pay for a new meter,” said Mr. Moses Kasongo, a resident of Kampala. Another user, who preferred anonymity, remarked, “I got the message late and felt pressured to comply.”
The upgrade is part of Uganda's broader effort to modernize its electricity sector, aligning with similar initiatives across the region. The STS standard is designed to streamline utility operations and enhance customer convenience.
Although the majority of Yaka users successfully transitioned to the new system, the challenges faced by the remaining users underline the need for improved communication during future technological upgrades. Umeme has pledged continued support to ensure all users benefit from the improved metering system.
