The Police remain clueless about the current location of Mr. Paul Akamba, the Member of Parliament for Busiki County. Mr. Akamba was forcefully rearrested three days ago right after being granted a Shs13 million cash bail by the Anti-Corruption Court in Kampala.
During the weekly police press briefing held yesterday, Fred Enanga, the police spokesperson, admitted to the media that there is no information regarding the legislator's whereabouts. “I have been waiting for information about him (Mr Akamba) but up to now (yesterday afternoon), I haven’t received the information. But when I get it, I will share,” Mr. Enanga stated.
As of last evening, Mr. Enanga had not provided any updates on the situation. Similarly, Mr. Akamba’s legal team, led by Richard Rugambwa, reported to the Chief Magistrate at the Anti-Corruption Court that they were also unaware of their client's location.
The unsettling incident occurred last Friday, just moments after Mr. Akamba’s release on bail. He was surrounded by his family and friends, celebrating his temporary freedom, when a group of men, identified as security personnel in plain clothes, suddenly appeared. These men forcefully apprehended Mr. Akamba and hurriedly whisked him away in a waiting vehicle to an undisclosed location.
This incident has sparked concerns and questions regarding the conduct of security forces and the transparency of the legal process. Mr. Akamba’s abrupt and forceful rearrest has not only left his family and legal team in distress but also raised eyebrows among human rights advocates and the general public.
The arrest and subsequent disappearance come in the wake of a high-profile corruption investigation, initiated by President Museveni, that has implicated several lawmakers. Mr. Akamba, along with two other MPs, was charged last week on corruption allegations. The charges are part of a broader effort to address corruption within government ranks, an issue that has long plagued the country.
The lack of information and communication from the police regarding Mr. Akamba’s situation is troubling, as it underscores potential gaps in the judicial and security systems. The absence of transparency and accountability raises serious concerns about the protection of legal and human rights.
As this story continues to unfold, the public and media await further details from the authorities. The case of Mr. Akamba’s disappearance is a critical test for the integrity of Uganda’s legal and security frameworks. It remains to be seen how the authorities will address these concerns and what steps will be taken to locate Mr. Akamba and ensure justice is served.
