On 12th April 2021, the sports fraternity and the country at large were hit by sad news of the retirement of Uganda Cranes captain and goal keeper Denis Masinde Onyango from national team football.
The 35 year old had just returned with the national team from Malawi where they lost 1-0 to the hosts and failed to qualify for the AFCON. A lot was however going around, claiming the federation was not paying the players and that these were some of the reasons "Mr safe hands" to quit the national team.
However, his good deeds are not just going to go unappreciated, as the parliament is set to dedicate a whole session just to honor him. This started as a tweet from fun factory comedian Hannington Bugingo who called the speaker and the parliament to honor Onyango.
During today's sitting, the speaker told the parliament that a session will be held to commemorate the glory of Onyango. Onyango started playing for Uganda Cranes in 2005 and by the time of his retirement, he had 82 caps. He was vital in their qualification to the 2017 AFCON, where he only conceded twice throughout the qualifiers.
In 2016, Onyango with Mamelodi Sundowns won the CAF champions league, went on to be named CAF African based player of the year and also ranked 10th on the list of best goalkeepers in the world that very year organized by International Federation of Football History and Statistics.
Maybe a statue in his memory should be erected outside Namboole as well ????
