Veteran singer Phina Mugerwa is one of the musicians that ran away from Eddie Kenzo's formed Musicians' Federation. She ran and decided to stay with the Uganda Musician’s Association without even giving her reasons. Despite criticism, she stayed with UMA without giving her reasons why. Well, she has come out to clarify this issue, saying she has her reasons for quitting he Federation.
According to Mugerwa, she quit Eddy Kenzo’s Federation and decided to stick with UMA simply because the Uganda Musicians Association was being called a group of thieves.
There is no denying that ever since the formation of the Federation, there has been a turbulence among musicians as they struggled to choose which side to stick with. UMA has therefore been in competition with the Federation since it’s formation.
Apparently, when Phina was sited at the gathering of the Federation, it was not only her that appeared but also the UMA President Cindy was there. According to Mugerwa, it was issues that were discussed in this particular meeting that made them realize that the Federation and UMA could not be one.
In her own narration, she stated that , Eddy Kenzo’s group said that associations were created to steal money. And as UMA, they took offense in this since they have never stolen anything and seemed to be a message that was directed at them.
“People took this the wrong way but I had never joined the federation. I was invited to one of their meetings just like other singers including my president, Cindy. However, some of the points raised in this meeting are what forced us to leave. They said that all associations were created to steal money. We have been in existence and I don’t recall us doing that. It was so offending and felt like a direct attack towards us,” she said.
