President Yoweri Museveni has extolled the late Tanzanian President Mwalimu Julius Kambarage Nyerere as the greatest African leader, describing him as a fearless defender of the oppressed and a blessing to the continent.
The tribute was delivered on his behalf by Prime Minister Rt. Hon. Nabbanja Robinah during the annual holy mass at the Uganda Martyrs Shrine Namugongo.
In a heartfelt message delivered by Prime Minister Rt. Hon. Nabbanja Robinah, President Yoweri Museveni lauded the late Mwalimu Julius Kambarage Nyerere, calling him the
"greatest African leader Africa has ever had."
The occasion was the annual holy mass held at the Uganda Martyrs Shrine Namugongo, dedicated to praying for Nyerere’s beatification as a saint in the Catholic Church.
The event, held every 1st of June and now marked as Nyerere Day in Uganda, drew a significant crowd of relatives, friends, and dignitaries from Tanzania and Uganda. Among the attendees were Mama Maria Nyerere, the widow of the late president, and their granddaughter, Regina Bumi Mwaipopo.
The congregation gathered to honor Nyerere’s memory and pray for his recognition as a saint by the Catholic Church.
Prime Minister Nabbanja echoed President Museveni's sentiments, emphasizing Nyerere’s commitment to social justice and his efforts in fostering peace and unity across the African continent.
"Nyerere's legacy is one of unwavering commitment to justice and equality," she stated. "His vision for a united Africa continues to inspire and guide us."
The annual holy mass at Namugongo has become a significant event on the Catholic calendar in Uganda, drawing thousands of pilgrims from across the region.
This year’s mass was graced by several ministers, religious leaders, and opinion leaders, reflecting Nyerere's wide-reaching influence and enduring legacy.
The beatification process for Nyerere began in 2006, recognizing his devout Catholic faith and his contributions to humanity. His efforts in promoting education, eradicating poverty, and advocating for human rights are key elements in his candidacy for sainthood.
The annual prayers at Namugongo are part of the ongoing efforts to support his beatification.Mama Maria Nyerere, visibly moved, expressed her gratitude to the attendees for their continued support and prayers.
"Julius was a man of great faith and humility," she said. "Your prayers and remembrance mean a lot to our family and to all who believed in his vision for a better Africa."
