Latest news falling onto our desk indicates that Ms. Anita Among, the deputy Speaker of the Ugandan Parliament has expressed interest in being speaker of the same parliament.
The development comes shortly after the passing on of the Speaker incumbent over the weekend. Article 82(4) of the constitution of Uganda, subject to close (4) of Article 81 says, “No business shall be transacted in Parliament other than an election to the office of Speaker at any time that office is vacant”. Close sources reveal that Deputy Speaker Among sent her personal assistant Mary Athieno to pick speakership nomination forms on her behalf from the NRM secretariat among Kyaddondo road on Tuesday morning.
Earlier on Tuesday morning, Among also signed a condolence book in honor of the late speaker Jacob Oulanya! At the time of filing this story, Among and West Budama MP Jacob Oboth Oboth were still the only ones that has expressed interest in the position with hopes of many others joining the que. Oboth had to resign his ministerial position to join this quest.
