Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford, Ajax's Jordan Henderson and Chelsea trio Reece James, Raheem Sterling and Ben Chilwell are the big names that have been left out in England's provisional 33-man squad for Euro 2024.
Since the deadline for submitting the squads is June 6th, England manager Gareth Southgate has decided to use the period in between to choose the final 26-man squad from the provisional 33-man squad he has currently named.
Bayern Munich forward Harry Kane is the captain, but the major news is that both Marcus Rashford and Henderson have been left out.
Having started 26 premier league matches and coming off the bench in seven more, Marcus Rashford has only managed to score 7 goals. This is his third lowest tally across a season in his career.
Southgate said the following about his decision to leave out Rashford;
With Marcus, we just feel other players have had better seasons. That's it.
Henderson has also struggled in the past 12 months, first making a controversial move to Saudi Arabia before a disappointing transfer to Ajax in January.
Southgate said the following about Henderson;
The 33 isn't quite a fair definition because we are taking a bigger squad with young players to look at as well.
Henderson has missed five weeks and hasn't been able to get to the intensity since then. He's a fantastic professional, it was a difficult call to make as he's been so supportive in my time. Ben [Chilwell], Marcus and Jordan were all incredibly professional and they dealt with it well. Henderson will be a miss. He is an exceptional individual, a fantastic human being. He's been in that leadership role since I took charge.
We have had a lot of our senior players missing, we made Declan Rice captain and he rose to that challenge. That's what we want other people to do. We have young players with a lot of caps, there's no reason why young players can't lead. You are giving other players space to develop.
Sterling made 31 starts across all competitions for Chelsea. He scored 10 goals and registered 5 assists. Sterling seems to be the unlucky player among all the numerous attackers Southgate would have chosen and missed to make the squad.
It's most likely Chelsea skipper Reece James and Ben Chilwell have been left out because they missed a large portion of the season with injury.
