The Political World is becoming more and more challenging and every stakeholder in this field can attest to that.
With the various changes after Donald Trump took over Presidency in the United States of America, there are also inverse changes in the politics of Smaller Countries, for instance Uganda.
Ugandans are still in disbelief after they woke up to news of Political figure head and Ugandan Journalist Andrew Mwenda was slapped with sanctions by the United States of America.
In accordance to these said sanctions, Andrew Mwenda has been accused of taking part in activities that undermine Democracy as well as his involvement in corruption and its promotion. These said sanctions were announced in a statement released by the United States Department of Treasury.
According to the said statement, Mwenda is alleged to have facilitated activities linked to financial misconduct within Uganda and he is also accused of having been directly involved in the erosion of good governance in his own Country Uganda.
With the new Governance, the United States of America was clear about it's stand regarding corruption, not only in their Country but in the World at large. The US government therefore concluded that they are now henceforth commited to addressing global corruption and holding individuals accountable as the basis for strong measures against the bizarre act.
The sanctions have been called quite harsh by Ugandans because they include asset freezing (Andrew Mwenda's assets) as well as restrictions on transactions involving United States entities.
For a man such as Mwenda, this is a huge blow to his reputation considering how respectable he has been not only as a public figure but most importantly as a political figure head
Andrew Mwenda has not come out to make a formal statement regarding these sanctions or the accusations regarding him actively taking part in corruption however. This, on a sad note has not stopped the debate that has arisen regarding the matter, not only in Uganda but beyond.
While supporters of the politician have criticized the US action as politically motivated, critics have come out to argue that there is indeed need for greater transparency and accountability among influential figures that are involved in Uganda’s politics.
The Ugandan government also has yet to issue a formal statement on the matter, but critics argue that the sanctions are likely to strain relations between the two Countries
As the story is still developing, we await a statement from the Government of Uganda and from Andrew Mwenda himself.
