Ugandans, especially school going children have since yesterday flocked taxi and bus packs to return to their villages following the president's suspension of school for 42 days as a move to curb the spread of covid-19.
As the saying goes, owners of bus and taxi companies saw this as a blessing in a disguise as they started charging exorbitant charges to travellers.
This started gradually, where a bus would introduce a fee and this could be followed by the rest. By the end of today, a bus going to Mbarara has been charging 150k compared to the initial 30k.
Those traveling to Gulu, were being charged between 80k-120k. This left many travellers stranded and others enraged. The head of anti-corruption committee, Col. Edith Nakalema has however intervened and warned the stakeholders about the inhuman charges.
She was also spotted in Kisenyi bus terminal and a number of bus operators were arrested. The Uganda Police has also come out to avail 4 of their buses to transport the stranded passengers for free.
