The newly constructed headquarters of the National Unity Platform (NUP) in Kavule, Kawempe Division, Makerere, Kampala City, became the epicenter of a high-stakes standoff today as the anticipated inauguration ceremony faced a formidable blockade by a significant deployment of army and police personnel.
What had been a scene of festivity and anticipation, marked by NUP supporters adorning the area with red and white balloons, quickly turned into a chilling display of force as the sun rose on this fateful day. Yasin Ndidde, the Deputy RCC for Kawempe Division, issued a decree warning residents to steer clear of the NUP headquarters, emphasizing that violations would result in arrest and detention.

"Yesterday, the security leadership informed us that there are other events that might coincide with our event today. They mentioned that they wouldn't have enough manpower to provide us with security. Interestingly, we hadn't even requested security from them. However, they seem to have sufficient manpower to disrupt our programs. All of this indicates a lack of goodwill." He remarked.
Ssenyonyi also implied that the ruling circles of the NRM viewed NUP's aspirations with envy and resentment, unable to accept the audacity of an opposition party establishing its headquarters on its own terms. This clash between NUP's permanent headquarters and the NRM's history of rented spaces symbolized a broader ideological battle within the city.
