In case you read about the European Super League that had been proposed to be played by mainly the elite clubs from the top European Football playing countires, you might be interested in the African Football League.
This new tournament organized by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) had been slated to start in 2022 and the initial name was Africa Super League, before being renamed African Football League.
The tournament was to have 24 clubs, selected from three geographically different regions with a promotional based system. However, this year's inaugural tournament will have only 8 clubs and will be a knockout kind of tournamnet.
The eight clubs to compete in the inaugural tournamnent include Enyimba FC (Nigeria), Wydad AC (Morocco), Mamelodi Sundowns FC (South Africa), TP Mazembe (DR Congo), Espérance Sportive de Tunis (Tunisia), and Atlético Petróleos de Luanda (Angola).
Each of the 8 competing clubs is already a quarterfinalist, given the tournament is to start on the quarter finals and each team will walk away with 1million US Dollars. The winner will receive 4million US Doallrs, 3million US Dollars will go to the runner-up and the two finalists will receive 1.7million US Dollars each.
"The Prize Money is appealing and competitive as the Winning Club will only play 6 matches to win the substantial Prize Money of $ 4,000,000," - Said a CAF official.
Tanzania will plya host to the opening ceremony in Dar-El-Salam on Friday October 20th, 2023. Later on, Simba Sports Club will face off against Egypt's 11 times CAF Champions League winners Al -Ahly at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium. The grand final, will be played on Saturday 11th/November/2023.
