Top 5 things to expect in the 2023 Nyege Nyege Festival
    • November 9, 2023 • 1 year ago

In the heart of Uganda, nestled amidst the lush greenery and breathtaking landscapes, lies a festival that has transformed the landscape of African music and culture – the Nyege Nyege Festival. This electrifying event, held annually since 2015, has captivated the global music scene, showcasing the raw energy and innovative sounds of East African artists.

The Nyege Nyege story began in 2013 when Arlen Dilsizian and Derek Debru, two expats based in Kampala, Uganda, embarked on a mission to promote Ugandan underground music. They established the Nyege Nyege collective, a platform for outsider music, primarily electronic, by African artists. The collective's name, "Nyege Nyege," derives from a Luganda word meaning "an uncontrollable urge to dance," aptly capturing the essence of the music they sought to celebrate.

The collective's initial focus was organizing parties and artist residencies, but their vision extended beyond these events. They yearned to create a larger platform for the burgeoning Ugandan music scene, a stage where local artists could shine alongside international talents. This desire gave birth to the Nyege Nyege Festival, a multi-day, multi-stage event held at an abandoned riverfront resort in Jinja, Uganda.

From its inception, the Nyege Nyege Festival has been a beacon of diversity, showcasing a kaleidoscope of musical genres. The festival's lineup has consistently defied expectations, featuring a blend of traditional African sounds, cutting-edge electronic music, and everything in between. This eclectic mix has attracted music enthusiasts from across the globe, eager to discover the unique rhythms and melodies emanating from East Africa.

The 2023 Nyege Nyege Festival promises to be no exception, with a lineup featuring over 500 artists from over 30 countries. The festival will feature a range of musical styles, including singeli (a high-tempo, electronic genre from Tanzania), baile funk (a Brazilian dance music style), and traditional Ugandan sounds like baganda and acholi.

The festival will be held in three different sites along the Nile River: the Jinja Golf Course, the Source of the Nile, and the Jinja Showground and it will start from November 9 to 12, 2023, in Jinja, Uganda.

Beyond its musical offerings, the Nyege Nyege Festival is a celebration of African culture. The festival site transforms into a vibrant hub of cultural experiences, offering workshops, art installations, and traditional dance performances. Visitors can immerse themselves in the rich tapestry of African traditions, gaining a deeper understanding of the continent's cultural heritage.
