Kabale, Uganda | Authorities have confirmed that the body of a turnboy involved in a fuel tanker explosion in Kyanamira sub-county, Kabale district, was completely burnt. The incident occurred along the Mbarara-Kabale highway on Saturday when a Nissan semi-trailer fuel tanker, registered as UAQ 912N/SSD 351Y, rolled over and exploded while traveling from Kampala to Kabale town.
The driver, 34-year-old Geoffrey Onyango from Eldoret, Kenya, managed to escape the vehicle but suffered severe burns and fell while attempting to flee. He was subsequently rushed to Kabale Regional Referral Hospital in critical condition.
Police spokesperson Elly Maate reported that after extinguishing the fire, authorities discovered the remains of 20-year-old Rogers Onyango, also a Kenyan national, inside the vehicle. The remains have been taken to the hospital mortuary for a postmortem, while efforts are underway to notify the deceased's family and Kenyan authorities.
This incident follows another tragic fuel tanker accident on Tuesday in Kigoogwa town, approximately 22 kilometers from Kampala, where a different tanker overturned and caught fire, resulting in at least 17 fatalities.
