UCE 2023 RESULTS OUT: Surge in Division 1 Performance, Drop in Failures
    • February 15, 2024 • 9 months ago

Today, the Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) unveiled the much-anticipated 2023 Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) results, heralding a notable uptick in academic excellence among candidates achieving Division 1. The announcement also signaled a substantial decrease in failures, paving the way for the majority of candidates to progress to the next phase of their education journey.

According to the released data, a staggering 95.9% of candidates, totaling 329,939 learners, demonstrated the proficiency required to advance to the Post-UCE level, marking a significant improvement in overall performance.

The results revealed a particularly impressive surge in the number of candidates securing Division 1 distinctions, with 64,782 individuals (17.9% of the total candidates) attaining this prestigious accolade. This marks a considerable increase from the preceding year's figure of 13.5%, indicating a commendable enhancement in academic achievement.

In 2023, a total of 364,469 candidates registered for the UCE examination, comprising 49.5% male candidates and 50.5% female candidates. Of these, 361,695 candidates, including 279,032 males and 182,663 females, successfully sat for the examination, showcasing a commendable commitment to academic pursuits.

Notably, the performance disparity between male and female candidates varied across subjects. While female candidates exhibited superior performance in English language, their male counterparts outperformed them in disciplines such as History, Geography, sciences, and commerce, underscoring the multifaceted dynamics of academic achievement.

These results mark the culmination of the old curriculum era, signifying a pivotal moment in Uganda's educational landscape. With the Ministry of Education poised to unveil a comprehensive strategy for transitioning from lower secondary to upper secondary education under the new competence-based curriculum, stakeholders anticipate a paradigm shift in educational approaches aimed at fostering holistic skill development and academic excellence among learners.

As the nation celebrates the remarkable achievements of its students, attention now turns to the forthcoming educational reforms, which hold the promise of shaping a brighter future for Uganda's youth and equipping them with the competencies required to thrive in an ever-evolving global landscape.
