UPC's Eunice Otuko Emerges Victorious in Oyam North By-Election
    • July 7, 2023 • 2 years ago

In a closely contested by-election, Dr. Eunice Apio Otuko, the flag bearer for the Uganda People's Congress (UPC), has emerged as the winner with a total of 15,718 votes.

The Electoral Commission's returning officer, Richard Onabo, declared Apio the victor, securing 47.38% of the valid votes cast.

The by-election for the Oyam North constituency saw a keen competition among four candidates.

Apio faced off against Samuel Okello Engola of the National Resistance Movement (NRM), Freddy Newton Okello representing the Democratic Party (DP), and Daniel Okello from the National Unity Platform (NUP).

Samuel Engola, son of the late former Oyam North MP Charles Okello Engola, garnered a commendable 15,161 votes, securing a strong position in the race.

Freddy Newton Okello, the DP candidate, trailed behind with 714 votes. Meanwhile, Daniel Okello of the NUP received the least number of votes, tallying at 403.

The by-election attracted significant voter turnout, with a total of 32,751 votes cast. However, 755 votes were deemed invalid due to various reasons.

The victory of Dr. Eunice Apio Otuko in the Oyam North by-election marks a significant milestone for the UPC party. Her win not only demonstrates the confidence and support she has garnered from the constituents but also reaffirms the party's position in the political landscape of Oyam North.

The by-election followed the unfortunate demise of Charles Okello Engola, who was tragically shot dead by his bodyguard in May 2023. The contest to fill the vacant seat was eagerly watched by the community, as they sought to choose a representative who would continue the legacy of their late MP.

As Dr. Eunice Apio Otuko assumes office as the new representative for Oyam North, she faces the responsibility of addressing the concerns and aspirations of her constituents.

With her victory, the people of Oyam North place their trust in her ability to effectively represent their interests and contribute to the development and progress of the constituency.

The successful conclusion of the by-election not only highlights the democratic process in action but also serves as a reminder of the importance of citizens exercising their right to vote.

The outcome will undoubtedly shape the course of Oyam North's political landscape, as the newly elected representative embarks on fulfilling her duties and responsibilities in service to the people.
