What was seen as a long time coming has finally arrived. The new Omicron variant which is termed as deadlier than all that have sprung up over time has finally been confirmed in Uganda.
In a report published yesterday by the Uganda Virus Research Institute (UVRI), 13 travellers were checked for Covid-19 at the Entebbe airport, 11 were sequenced and 7 out of these turned out to be positive with Omicron B.1.1.529 Covid-19 variant.
The 13 touched down Entebbe Airport on the 29th of November/2021 and were returning from coutnries such as Nigeria, South Africa, United Arab Emirates, Democratic Republic of Congo and the Netherlands. These were aboard Kenya, Ethiopia, Uganda and Airlink airlines.
The Omicron variant has been spreading at a high speed especially in the South African countries like Lesotho, Namibia and South Afica. This led to the flaging of these countries by the Western countries, who are also being hut by the same variant.
With the nation preparing to re-open in January next year as the president has been promising during his speeches, and the only viable solution the taskforce always fronts of lockdown, the future of the resumption of the rest of the economy remains in balance.
