Reports reaching our desk suggest that several employees of Urban Tv are on the verge of losing their jobs as the station plans to halt its operations in the Uganda's broadcasting landscape.
The news that came as a shock to many was first made public by Robin Kisti, currently a former worker of Urban Tv who took to her Snapchat on Wednesday evening and let her fans that she will no longer be on air.
By time of writing this article, the reason behind the closure of the station had not been established nor the management had come out with an official statement regarding the matter.
"To all my fans that watch me, I just wanted to let you know that you will no longer be seeing me because Urban TV is closing and all us will no longer be on air! Thank you for the love you showed me, now on to the next chapter
It has to be noted that Robin Kisti first attracted the attention of Ugandan Tv viewers while presenting Login show on NTV Uganda, an entertainment and lifestyle show.
The talented tv girl went silent for a while after leaving the Serena based Tv station but later bounced back and joined the defunct SK Mbuga’s STV .
This was of course after taking to social media to express her displeasure with Next media services management for denying her chance to join the NBS After 5 show. The job was instead given to Sheila Gashumba, who also left the show after only one year of services.
Kisti also left STV citing expenditure concerns where she was spending more than her earnings and then joined Urban TV.
About Urban Tv
Urban TV was launched 14 years ago and packaged as an infotainment station targeting urban youth. However, unlike its sister station, Bukedde TV, Urban never really picked up the pace to stand above rival English language TV stations.
In recent years, the station which is a subsidiary of Vision group introduced a new programme called ‘Celebrity Edition’, using celebrities to anchor its Saturday 8.00 pm news.
Vision Group is one of the largest media conglomerates in Uganda. It publishes six newspapers –New Vision, Bukedde, Etop, Rupiny, Orumuri, Kampala Sun; three magazines – Flair, Bride & Groom and Toto; three TV stations – Bukedde, TV West, Urban, and six radio stations – XFM, Bukedde FM, Radio West, Radio Rupiny, Etop Radio and Arua One.
