Vincent Kompany has been appointed as the new Bayern Munich manager to replace the departing Thomas Tuchel.
Bayern Munich finished third in the Bundesliga behind Stuttgart who were 17 points behind Champions Bayer Leverkusen. This is the first time Bayern Munich have failed to win the league in 11 years.
Bayern Munich were also knocked out by Real Madrid in the semi finals of the UEFA Champions League. They were defeated 4-3 on aggregate by the Spanish side.
It is reported that a number of managers rejected the Bayern Munich job. They include former Manchester United interim manager Ralf Rangnick, Leverkusen's Xabi Alonso and even their former manager Julian Nagelsmann who is currently the manager of the Germany national team.
However, Manchester City legend Vincent Kompany accepted the job.
Kompany led Burnley to an impressive 101 points in the Championship in the 2022-23 season but couldn't keep the club in the Premier league despite their heavy summer investment. Burnley were relegated with 24 points having only managed to win five games the whole season.
Burnley made the following statement;
We can confirm that Burnley FC has come to an agreement that will allow Vincent Kompany to leave Turf Moor. Whilst we were initially confident in retaining our manager, the changing dynamics of the situation made this impossible. We understand the allure and prestige of a club like Bayern Munich and respect Vincent’s ambition to explore new opportunities. We wish only the best for Vincent and would like to put on record our appreciation for his dedication every single day he was a part of this football club. Our priority remains the stability and success of Burnley FC, and we will continue to take the necessary steps to ensure that our ambition is realised - namely our return to the Premier League. We have started the search for a new manager and will make an announcement in due course.
Kompany has become known for his attractive possession based style of play and the way he transformed Burnley from a defensive side to an adventurous and front footed force.
Kompany said the following;
I'm looking forward to the challenge of FC Bayern. It's a great honour to be able to work for this club, FC Bayern is an institution in international football. As a coach, you have to stand for what you are as a personality. I love having the ball, being creative and we also have to be aggressive on the pitch and courageous. I'm now looking forward to the very basic things: working with the players, building a team. When the foundation is in place, success will follow.
