In a shock announcement this evening, Uganda Football National Team Captain and Mamelodi Sundowns Goal keeper, Denis Masinde Onyango announced his retirement from National team action.
Onyango's retirement comes after the announcement of another National Team player Hassan Wasswa Mawanda in a space of two days. The recent announcements of retirement from senior players project the bitter strife between FUFA President Moses Magogo and Players after the former publicly slandered the players' performance as "shitty football" in the recently concluded CHAN games where Uganda didn't qualify for the Afcon.
In a circulating audio over the past days, Onyango expressed his disappointment in the Magogo administration for the bitter talk against players and his lack of remorse despite the outcry from Ugandan football lovers all-over the country that were characterized by demonstrations from former National team players led by Mike Sulaiman Mutyaba on Friday morning.
The Mamelodi Sundowns number 1 was also ranked as the tenth best goalkeeper in the world in a list for 2016 compiled by the International Federation of Football History and Statistics.
The 35 year old has decided to hang his gloves following 79 appearances for the Cranes for 16 years and captaining the side since April 2017, retiring the same in 2021.
