There is still an ongoing debate regarding musicians releasing bubblegum music for Music lovers in the Ugandan Music industry.
Whereas some people are of the view that music back then was more educative than the current music trend, some people believe that music is meant to be for stress relief, not necessarily for education or lessons on morality.
In a heated debate during the Vvawo Mpitewo show that aired on Sanyuka TV, Don Chris came out to defend songs like Enkudi and Hozambe, stating that music is not meant to teach morality but rather to be enjoyed by people. According to him, people should listen to a song while expecting to relieve stress, not expecting to learn life lessons from it.
Don Chris further went on to state that if anyone needs guidance and advice, they should turn to their parents for that, not to musicians. He stated that if parents have failed to impart morality into a person, can any musician actually do this?
“If you want lessons on morality, advice and all that, go to your parents. Life lessons should come from them, not from musicians. Let us be guided. If your parents failed to teach you manners, do you expect a musician to be the one you will learn manners from?” he asked.
In the same light, James Propa also stated that it is an audience that chooses the kind of music they would like to listen to because educative and constructive music also exists even on social media but the truth is people will only listen to what they want and no one can force them otherwise.
“All that music exists on social media. Be it the music you call educative and the one you call non educative. It is all on the same social media platforms. The thing is, it is the people that decide what they want to listen to and there is no way you can force them to listen to things they do not want to hear. They filter and choose what appeals to them more.” He stated.
While on call in the studio, Eddy Messiah stated that in his view, this kind of music is entirely trending because of the current generation. He stated that this is a new generation and they are obviously meant to support their own music rather than the music the old generation used to enjoy.
“You need to remember that this is a new generation. The music they are listening to is of their generation. Does anyone expect them to enjoy the same music we used to enjoy back then? It is about the language they understand. It’s different from our language.” He stated
