Results from celebrations that ushered Ugandans into the new year 2023, have started pouring in!
On a sad note, atleast nine people are dead following a crowd surge at Freedom City mall. According to Police, all this happened as revelers welcomed the new year at the Entebbe Road based mall.
KMP deputy Police spokesperson ASP Luke Owoyesigyire on Sunday morning said - "It is alleged that the incident occurred at midnight when the event's MC encouraged attendees to go outside and watch the fireworks display."
"After the display ended, a stampede ensued - resulting into the instant deaths of five people. Several casualties were transported to hospital where a total of nine fatalities were confirmed following the crowd crush" he added!
Police at Katwe Police are investigating the matter. As of now, the bodies have been transferred to Mulago Hospital City Mortuary.
These deaths are an addition to many that have occurred all through the festive season mostly from motor accidents.
