The United States of America has revoked the visa of Hon. Anita Among, Speaker of Ugandan Parliament.
Speaker Among comes off as the first victim" of likely sanctions after Uganda lawed an Anti-LGBTQ legislation on Monday morning.
Quoting the email that confirmed the development, Hon. Asuman Basalirwa who moved the bill displayed a copy of a print out from the email to journalists at Parliament.
"As of May 12, 2023, you (Speaker Among) don't possess a valid visa to the US although you are welcome to apply again" he said before adding that they probably looked for his too with fail and they took on the speaker as the first victim.
Under the new legislation, those who perform homosexuality face extreme penalties that may include life imprisonment.
Before the news broke that her American visa was evoked, Among had earlier on Monday made it clear that under her leadership - "Parliament shall always stand for and promote the interests of the people of Uganda".
The US Mission in Uganda was not available for a comment on the matter. We shall keep you posted.
