Alexander Bagonza, commonly known by his stage name Apass, is one of the very few Ugandan artists who came out and used their huge online following to talk against the increased injustices in the country between October and November 2020. He did not stop there but also called out fellow artists who had gone totally silent over the crimes befalling their “fans.”
The ‘guli wano’ hit maker encouraged all Ugandans to go vote for their candidate of choice during the recently concluded presidential election, stating that it’s only then that they’ll have rights to complain on anything.
So after all that activism, Apass took to his twitter and expressed interest in joining politics. “I may run for mayor of Kampala in 2026, if I do, I will win and make Kampala a tourist attraction.” Tweeted Mr. Bagonza.
Just to take you two years back, in 2018 the government introduced Over the Top Tax (OTT) and a sect of Ugandans spearheaded by Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu alias Bobi wine took to the streets of Kampala to protest against these ‘inhuman’ taxes.
Among those was, guess what? Apass the teacher. So, are we right to say all the activism was a ‘political campaign’ we never saw or the self-acclaimed G.O.A.T is serious?
