While the death of Kawempe North Member of Parliament Muhammad Ssegirinya still lingers in the hearts if citizens, so many things about his burial can never be forgotten and has not left the hearts of many individuals.
Chief Justice Alfonse Owiny-Dollo is one of the various people that were affected by everything that transpired while the late leader was being put to rest. During the burial of Muhammad Ssegirinya, the National Unity Platform leader Bobi Wine made some remarks against the Judiciary that bothered the chief justice.
Bobi Wine came out in his hour long speech and openly accused the Judiciary of not granting bail to suspects in a way that he termed unfair. He then went on to suggest that judges were following orders from the President of the republic of Uganda who wanted to keep members of the opposition behind bars instead of doing their jobs fairly.
In his speech therefore, he was of the implication that judges were more interested in their own benefits rather than in practicing justice which is supposed to be their top priority.
This did not sit well with the Chief Justice who therefore decided to respond to the opposition leader. During the Judicial Annual Retreat Owiny-Dollo reminded Bobi Wine of a particular time when the same judges he now criticises helped him. He pointed out that those "worthless" judges (as Bobi Wine thinks of them) had granted him bail during the 2021 elections, allowing him to campaign freely despite the previous restrictions on him.
Owiny-Dollo stressed that if it weren't for these same judges he is criticizing now, Bobi Wine could have been jailed for a long period of time and even denied a chance to take part in politics. The chief Justice was then quick to remind him that he should never forget how he was saved by the people he is harshly putting down currently.
He also made it a point to tell Bobi Wine that the mere fact that he benefitted from these judges is enough proof that the justice system is alive and has a brain of its own, something that contradicts Bobi Wine's words.
Owiny-Dollo further went on and condemned the baseless attacks on the Judiciary and called for peace and unity, saying that justice would only prevail where there is unity and no public arguments.
Chief Justice Owiny-Dollo was quick to say that he was not only defending the justice system but rather, it is a matter of encouraging a more positive discussion about the justice system in the Country.
